Visiting Artist at Falmouth Elementary School

The third grade class in Falmouth Elementary School got to spend the day with Jasmine - where they learned about the many different possibilities of creative expression, discussed the value of both play and perseverance when pursuing something we love, and learned hands-on from Jasmine in a painting workshop.

The day began with a presentation and Q & A session with Jasmine, where she shared her own story of how seascape art became so important in her life, and how her art making process changed over the years to adapt to some unexpected situations.

Students got to see the progression of her seascape paintings, and learned about how starting with something small-scale can eventually lead to something bigger than we ever imagined, especially when we practice and trust the exploration along the way.

Jasmine also shared the passion behind her miniature painting business “Impossibly Tiny”, which offered a reminder that there are infinite avenues of creative expression, and sometimes the most unlikely of events can be what allows us to discover them.

Presentation - a reminder that no matter what creative ideas you may have, there are endless avenues to express them!

Afterward, students were guided by Jasmine in a hands-on painting workshop, where they received step-by-step instruction on how to make their own miniature seascape paintings. They learned about mixing colors, use of simple shadows and highlights to create a more realistic painting, and explored how to use tools like paint brushes (and toothpicks!) in different ways to create texture, lines, and details with ease.

By the end of the day, 170 new seascape paintings were created, and each one headed home with a student - and some teachers too! Jasmine spent the afternoon checking in on the students’ creations, listening to the stories of their process, answering questions, and giving individual teaching to those who were curious to learn more.
